I would not have been able to manifest the following without the support of my life mate, Stephen Kelly, his family, and my community.
I launched SonneBlauma Danscz Theatre upon graduation from Cal Arts, and there were seven distinct tries at launching the company, before something happened in 2005, and the first crop of dancers showed up nine years after starting the project. There was a large chunk of time devoted to creating the non-profit, and a period in my integration process of giving space to the visual artist to take classes and play, but once it took, the joy began.
As SonneBlauma, there were many firsts for our small boutique dance community company.
We were the first to host a dance company from Los Angeles, Tongue.
We were the first to organize a tour in California.
We were the first to tour to Festivals in state and out of state produced by other dance companies.
We were the first to co-produce a Festival in another country.
We were the first to tour to New York.
We were the first to tour to Europe.
We were the first to produce and international dance festival.
We were the first to initiate collaborative and co-creative paradigms.
We were the first to host series of master class series and educational outreaches.
Yes, there were events associated with the University, but the University only served the needs of the super-stars at that time perpetuating a paradigm I devoted my entire career as a dance maker rebelling against, and seeking another way. These were events that were managed at a community level.
I love you SonneBlauma Danscz Theater and I love you Sinan and Ilkay, for seeing us, and inviting us to Istanbul, realizing the dream of becoming an international dance company.
The jobs I held to support the journey as a dance maker, as SonneBlauma, included working in a geological firm as an administrative assistant, then nearly five years in the field of ombudsing, followed by working as a law firm receptionist.
It was an extreme lifestyle, working full time at other things to pay the bills, and rehearsing and producing and touring all other available hours, not to mention, initially also supporting my partner and his work as a pianist, helping to produce his concerts.
I learned a lot about production from him, that is for sure.
Event Summary
EVENTS PRODUCED and/or CO-PRODUCED BY SONNEBLAUMA (we morphed into ArtBark in 2012)
ADaPT FESTIVAL SERIES: 2011-2013
In 2011 we launched our first international festival, the SB-ADaPT Festival. As we morphed into ArtBark International this continued on in 2012 in collaboration with RAW MATTERS in Vienna, Austria, and in 2013 and as a tri-city festival in Brooklyn, NY; Santa Barbara, CA; and Pasadena, CA. Our organization, in interest of promoting growth in the community, stepped aside from festival production when another dance company stepped forwards expressing a desire to produce festivals in Santa Barbara (at this time we did not feel there was space enough in our small town for two dance festivals)

CALENDAR
1996
I graduated with an MFA in choreography knowing NOTHING about the craft of building, growing, nurturing a dance company, because this wasnʻt taught in college. I always created in context of family/community, never to serve my own selfish needs solely, but always thinking of others, which I realize now, was the wisdom of my ancestors within. A very Hawaiian thing to do, and also, my Yugoslavian grandfather, he would have approved.
The Future Traditions Foundation received its 501 (c) 3 status in 1998.
This foundation I built from the ground up in collaboration with Sarah Wingren and my partner Stephen Kelly with the educational support of WEV (Womenʻs Economic Ventures. The foundation became an umbrealla not only for my projects, but other artists projects. Both my partner and I retired from the foundation, and it lives on in some form!
